What is a Lab-grown Diamond?
When lab-grown diamonds first emerged, a collective curiosity followed. What is a lab-grown diamond? Some asked. To answer that question, we first need to clear a few common doubts concerning these spectacular stones.
So, to begin with, are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds? Well, the answer is simply affirming. Lab-grown diamonds are real as mined ones are. They are not imposters or substitutes which you find in the market at far cheaper prices. These stones go by the names man-made and lab-grown diamonds.
Sometimes, they are also denoted as synthetic diamonds. This leads to questions in the minds of the buyers. Although produced in a lab, the word “synthetic” does not accurately represent lab-made diamonds and often leads many to think of them as fake.
To clear the persisting doubt once and for all, lab-grown diamonds are not at all fake. That would be cubic zirconia and the likes that are synthetically made and have no physical or chemical commonness with original or lab-grown diamonds.
However, as alike as natural and lab-made diamonds are, they are the same. There are just a couple of fine and unimportant points of difference between the two. The first is their origin. Lab-grown diamonds as the name suggests are born in labs whereas natural diamonds are found in nature. One is a product of cutting-edge scientific technology and another is our planet’s geological processes.
So, in conclusion, a lab-grown diamond is physically, chemically, and optically identical to its natural counterparts. Therefore, the differences do not count for much.
How are they created?
We all know that mined diamonds are formed deep under the earth where the heat and pressure of the earth’s core transform coal and such minerals into sparkling, precious rocks that we know as diamonds. A rough diamond does not look the way diamonds adorning pieces of jewellery do. They are exploited from the womb of the earth, cleaned, cut and polished to make them look the way they do.
Now, coming to lab-grown diamonds, the process of their origination very closely mimics the real process. Makers simulate the same process that happens deep underneath the earth’s surface inside a laboratory.
Speaking precisely, there are two processes in which diamonds are grown in labs, one is High-Pressure High Temperature shortened as HPTP, and another is the Chemical Vapor Deposition aka CVD. Although the underlying principles of both these processes are close, if not identical, each is unique.
HPHT
Diamonds made through HPHT uses one of the three processes, namely belt press, cubic press, and sphere press. Speaking in layman’s terms, each of these methods involves the generation of a temperature. The progressions occur in extremely high heat and temperature. In this setting, diamond grows naturally and at a rapid pace.
The HPHT process involves the use of a micro-diamond as a seed on which more carbon is deposited to form a bigger crystal. Through exposure to temperatures as high as 1500 Celsius and pressure of 1.5 million pounds every square inch, pure carbon is baked. This carbon is then cooled and the product you get at the end of this process is a pure natural diamond.
CVD
The CVD process is slightly different, in that it uses a sliver of HPHT diamond seed to kick start. The entire process takes place inside a sealed chamber in which the seed is placed and the heat is cranked up to 800 Celsius.
Next, the chamber is injected with carbon-carrying fumes like Methane. Under high heat, these gases are ionized and changed into plasma with the help of a technology that is used in appliances like microwaves. As the ionization happens, the molecular structure of the gases falls apart and pure carbon separates from the composition and deposits on the diamond seed. Slowly by slowly, the diamond crystalizes and form a bigger lump. That’s how diamonds are made through CVD processes.
What is the difference between Lab-Grown diamonds and mined diamonds?
Even though natural diamonds still rule the market, the popularity of lab-grown versions continues to grow. You wonder why? Because of their likeness to the former. However, some subtle differences remain between the two, and in this segment, we will unravel those.
The debate of which of the two is better is a long one and is not likely to be settled any time soon. So, let’s get to the facts instead of going around the arguable aspects. Natural diamonds signify tradition and custom and everything conventional. On the opposite, lab-grown diamonds stand for a love that is modern and rare.
The two are also different in prices. For the price of a natural diamond, you can get a lab-grown diamond of equivalent weight and quality and still save big. So, if you have no morbid hankering on the origin of your stone it’s always profitable to go for a lab-grown diamond.
Should I Choose A Lab-Grown Diamond?
That’s basically up to you because it all rests on your priorities. A lab-grown diamond happens to cover many priorities of a modern shopper whereas mined ones cater to the traditionalist tendencies of a conventional shopper. If you are up for a pick that is expressly modern and progressive, by all means, man-made diamonds are your best bet.
Another time when you want to choose a lab-grown diamond is when the price is a priority. Diamonds of great value, and quality, cost a lot less when picked from the lab-grown section as opposed to those in the natural end of the gallery. Thus, why waste your money on a natural diamond when you are getting everything and a colossal price concession with a lab-grown variety.
However, some of our buyers lean towards picking from the natural section, and we respect and encourage that too. In the end, we leave it to their judgement which section they want to pick their sparklers from.
Are Lab Diamonds Ethical?
Yes, lab diamonds are fully ethical because they are grown in laboratories and do not involve shady sources, child labour, funding of warring tribes, and such things. Instead, they are completely clean and sustainable, which is more than we can say for many natural-born diamonds.
Value for Money
A big part of the debate comprises the question of value. Natural diamonds are valuable and that is a fact. What about lab-grown diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds cost less, as a consequence, their resell values are lesser. However, they still are valuable and can be resold at reasonable prices. Therefore, they make good value for money.
